What is a Family Mentor?
Family mentors are volunteers who are a key component to the success of the Launch program! Remember back to the first time you owned a home...Was it difficult to set up all the required utilities? Did you know how to change your air filters? What happened the first time your toilet got clogged or your air conditioner quit working? All of these challenges are issues that can be MAJOR stumbling blocks to new homeowners. Often our tenants are first generation homeowners and do not have other family members or friends to turn to when these things come up. The role of the family mentor is for our tenant to have someone to call for advice when these things happen.
The family mentor should be a couple or individual who are service minded and God centered. Mentors should be patient, compassionate, organized, and willing to give their time. This role is based on the relationship theory and mentors should understand that it takes time to build that relationship and trust. East Lake Initiative staff is here to help support the tenants as well as our volunteers and mentors. In the event that you have a question or concern, please reach out for support.
Family mentors will receive training and have full access to a social worker that is equipped to help answer any questions that arise while walking with a Launch tenant.
