Building Relationships for the Sake of Community Transformation
From Laura Averette
Created for a Purpose Creative Arts Girls Camp is just one of the tools East Lake Initiative utilizes in order to fulfill the goal of “building relationships for the sake of community transformation."
In 2015 East Lake Initiative began offering Created for a Purpose, a premier girls camp, to the young ladies of East Lake in the inner city of Birmingham. Created for a Purpose was developed out of the desire to counter the messages of culture and instill into young women the truth that they are highly valued by God, created in His image, and for His purpose, utilizing creative arts.
Throughout the week of camp, the girls will take part in cooking, sewing, and an art project, as well as hearing from devotional speakers and participating in small groups.
Each girl coming through the camp doors comes from a very distinct background. Some enter each day eagerly remembering friends from last year and the devoted group of camp volunteers who faithfully return year after year. They share memories and hugs.
Some come in more timid and unsure, barely able to speak a word. But with each passing day, another plank on a bridge of trust is forged and a relationship is built. These relationships lay the foundation that can transform a community.
Over 50 girls attend camp each summer, with some of our original campers now serving as interns and assistants in leading the cooking, sewing and art projects the campers undertake throughout the week.
This year we will have a new host location at New Rising Star Church, enabling us to offer the camp to more girls. As always, the camp is offered to the girls at no cost. If you would like to sponsor a camper, a tax deductible gift can be made to Christ Church United Methodist Church with CFAP denoted on the gift or through East Lake Initiative's website. A gift of $50 can cover the cost of a camper.
